Facing Challenges: Insight From Arthur Ashe

Sometimes it can feel daunting to even think about making change. You compare yourself to others who are farther ahead of you on their journey or finished with the path you want to take and feel dejected, scared, or envious. You make excuses and hide, and then…nothing changes. The key to beating this pattern of jealousy and immobility is to accept that we all start somewhere. The person who has accomplished your dream fitness goals may be taking baby steps towards their own educational or career dreams. They may be sitting back and looking at your degrees with all the trepidation you have when you see their triathlon medal. It’s okay to be a beginner, to make mistakes, and to worry you’ll never have what it takes. Just don’t let any of those things stop you on the path you’re travelling and you’ll be golden. Instead, remember to breathe deeply, think positively, and then “start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” You’ll be amazed how far you can take yourself.
